Parent involvement is supported and represented by two groups recognized in the Thames Valley District School Board who fulfill different roles; the School Council and the Home and School Association.
A Home and School Association is an independent parent group that fosters ideals of co-operation and partnership within schools as well as within communities. Home and School members work with school administrators, teachers, and community leaders to provide all children the opportunity to succeed in school and beyond.
What is the role of a Home and School Association?
To engage parents, foster communication between the school and the parent community, and to organize events and activities to enrich the whole school community.
A Home and School Association is a member of the Ontario Federation of Home and School Associations, which is a registered charity independent of school boards and an officially recognized provincial parent organization.
Responsibilities of the Home and School Association
Identify and help meet the need of the school, community and students
Provide programs and projects to involve members related to the needs of the school and community
Work towards a good mix of parents, community and school staff
Ensure effective communication
Executive Committee - Elected Officers of the Home and School Association
The role of the executive committee is:
to provide leadership, act as a resource and support Association actions and projects
to take initiative that ensures that the Association and its members are involved only in activities it is authorized to do through OFHSA
to carry on the Associations business in accordance with the by-laws and OFHSA constitution
Role of the Home and School President:
Collaborate in partnership with school principal
Prepare agenda and facilitate H&SA meetings
Ensure minutes are kept and approved
Ensure financial records are kept and presented
